It’s time once again for the Meals on Wheels of Norman 2018 Golf Scramble presented by Bare Property Management. The benefit golf scramble is planned for Monday, July 23, 2018. The scramble will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at The Trails Golf Club in Norman.

Participants will take a chance at hitting a hole-in-one to win a Rolex watch, sponsored by Brockhaus Jewelry. All proceeds going to help provide meals to the ill, disabled and elderly clients of Meals on Wheels, a United Way of Norman agency.

Summer McGuire, associate director of Meals on Wheels of Norman said 33 teams have registered to participate in the scramble this year and there is still room for more teams to register.

“This is our seventh year to hold the scramble at The Trails. The event grows each year with new participants eager to become involved, support, and learn more about Meals on Wheels of Norman. It’s always so much fun,” said McGuire.

Sports Talk 1400 am will host a live remote from 7 to 9 a.m. at The Trails Golf Club to prepare for the shotgun start of the scramble.

McGuire explains that having Bare Property Management and Trails Golf Club, as hosts of the scramble, Meals on Wheels is able to reduce their expenses and serve seniors in need.

“This year, the golf scramble will coincide with the two millionth meal delivery by Meals on Wheels of Norman,” said McGuire. “The delivery of two million meals is such an achievement for our organization. We know that we could not accomplish this remarkable milestone without the support from the Norman Community.”

The majority of Meals on Wheels’ clients live on fixed incomes or social security alone and with the increase in cost of living, our clients are finding it even more difficult to afford the minimum price for their meals.  Participating as a golfer in the benefit golf scramble is a wonderful way to assist an often overlooked portion of the community while having a great time playing golf.

The golf scramble will also serve host to the Thirteenth Annual Silent Auction presented by Riverwind Casino.

Local businesses have been extremely generous in their donations this year, said McGuire.

“Everyone is invited to view our silent auction packages online and place bids, as well,” said McGuire. “Local businesses have contributed great gifts that we’ve put together into 29 amazing packages. We are also honored to be the recipient of nine amazing elite auction packages from Amfund that will be available for bid only at the Silent Auction on Monday, July 23 at The Trails. These packages are once in a lifetime opportunities that you won’t want to miss!”

Supporters are welcome to place bids early by viewing our packages on the Meals on Wheels web site: www.mealsonwheelsnorman.com.  The day of the scramble, the packages will be available for viewing at The Trails Golf Club, 3200 South Berry Road, Norman.

The auction will end at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 23.

Meals on Wheels would like to thank the 2018 Scramble Sponsors. Please visit the Meals on Wheels of Norman web site at www.mealonwheelsnorman.com for a complete list of sponsors.

The organization is also in need of volunteers to serve as Hole Watchers and help accommodate the golfers’ needs at the event. Please contact Summer McGuire at (405) 321-7272 or by email at summer@mealsonwheelsnorman.com if you are interested in volunteering at the golf scramble or interested in registering your team.

“Our goal is to pack the course this year,” said McGuire, “We’d love to have anyone interested come out and play. It’s always a great time!”

Meals on Wheels of Norman, A United Way of Norman agency, delivers noontime nutritious meals to the ill, disabled, and elderly of the Norman community.  Over the past year, the organization has seen a significant increase in the number of clients they serve, reaching over 300 clients per day. Approximately 90 percent of the clients currently receive meals at a subsidized cost.  Meals on Wheels pays an average amount of $15,000 per month for food cost alone.  Fund-raisers such as benefit golf scramble and Silent Auction assist the organization in allowing clients to receive meals on a sliding fee scale, according to their ability to pay.
