Inaugural Tourist for a Day event set for July 27on
Mayor-Elect Breea Clark and VisitNorman invite residents to be a Tourist for a Day at attractions across the Norman community on July 27.
The Tourist for a Day event will be a fun-filled affair aimed at encouraging Norman residents to get out and enjoy all their community has to offer. Attractions such as museums, retail districts and restaurants will be highlighted with many offering discounts or other incentives on that day. Some of these will be available thorough tagging on social media or the check-in feature on the VisitNorman app.
"Far too often, the busyness of everyday life can cause residents to overlook the entertainment and attractions in their own hometown. Norman has so much to offer, and the goal of this initiative is to connect Normanites by encouraging them to be tourists in their own town,” Clark said. “It has been exciting to see the variety of organizations, institutions, and businesses jump on board, and I am confident Tourist for a Day will be a fun event for all involved."
Tourism is the state’s third largest industry and injects $258 million in travel spending, a $74 million payroll and $10.7 million in annual tax receipts into Norman, according to the figures provided by the Oklahoma Travel and Recreation Department based on research conducted by Dean & Runyon Associates.
“What better way to share all the great things to do and see in Norman than through its own citizens? Serving as tourists in our own city and as ambassadors to potential travelers is an exciting prospect for us and Mayor-Elect Clark,” Dan Schemm, VisitNorman executive director, said. “When she first mentioned this to me, I could not say yes quickly enough. Having Norman’s own tell the city’s story firsthand is influential and carries so much weight.”
Businesses interested in participating should contact Schemm by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 405-366-8095 or the City of Norman’s Retail Marketing Coordinator, Sara Kaplan by email at email@example.com for more information about how to be included.
VisitNorman exists to promote the city, to attract overnight meeting, convention, sport and tourism business to the community, and to enhance and contribute to the overall identity and economic wellbeing of the city. VisitNorman’s vision is to be the leader who proactively markets and develops Norman as the preferred destination in Oklahoma.
