Senior Care

Norman Oklahoma is a great place for seniors. Norman has an array of resources for seniors, both recreational and basic. The environment is safe; living is affordable. There is convenient and professional healthcare, and many services aimed primarily at senior citizens.

To address the health needs of seniors, Norman provides several healthcare services including Aging Services, an Eldercare Nutrition Project, an Alzheimer’s Association, an Arthritis Foundation and the Ask a Nurse program through the Norman Regional Health System.

There are also many avenues for seniors to access social services. The local AARP office provides regular services as well as tax assistance to the elderly. Cleveland County has a Council on Aging. Legal Aid of Western Oklahoma has a local office. Meals on Wheels of Norman provides daily lunches to seniors unable to leave their homes and the local Social Security Administration office provides assistance to seniors when needed.

For the social senior, Norman provides several avenues to get out on the town. Full Circle Adult Day Center has daily activities to keep them busy between calls from the grandkids including bingo, outings in Norman, art classes, singing and dancing classes, Center Book Club, faith based activities and a cooking club.
The Norman Senior Citizens Center, located at 329 S. Peters, is a program of the Norman Parks and Recreation Department. The center offers a daily schedule of activities for all persons age 55 and older. In addition to the daily activities the center offers special activities and trips throughout the year. The Cleveland County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) gets seniors back into the work arena to keep them just busy enough so that they don’t miss that 40-hour work week.

To get around town there are a couple of options. Cleveland Area Rapid Transit offers regularly scheduled routes throughout Norman, and provides senior specific transportation through their CART Special Services program. The Kiwanis Kruiser and the Aging Services vans also aid seniors in getting to their desired locations.

Senior housing is one of the most important decisions to make in your later years. Norman offers several different types of senior housing, from fully functional furnished apartments to assisted living centers with memory care. Housing is available on all sides of town and in many different price ranges. The Norman Housing Authority and its non-profit, the Norman Affordable Housing Corporation, assist seniors with affordable housing needs, including handicap-equipped units.
