Order Rain Barrels Now to Have In Place Before Spring Rains

on December 12, 2017

The Central Oklahoma Stormwater Alliance (COSWA) is hosting a rain barrel promotion. Rain barrels made from repurposed food-grade barrels can be purchased for $63.50 at upcyclerainbarrel.com/normanok.html.

Online orders must be placed by April 4. The deadline for orders by mail is April 9. The rain barrels will be available for pick up at the City of Norman public works yard, 668 E. Lindsey St., on April 13 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. or on April 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Purchasing and installing a rain barrel is a great way to help protect and improve water quality in our community as well as to conserve our drinking water resources,” said Michele Loudenback, stormwater program specialist. “In Oklahoma, we recognize the need for conserving this precious resource.”

Rain barrels capture water from roofs and hold it for later use. The stored rain water can then be used to water lawns and gardens, wash cars, or other similar activities.

When stormwater runoff leaves a property, it can pick up pollution and carry into waterways. Using rain barrels helps to reduce stormwater pollution by minimizing the amount of stormwater runoff.

Rain barrel installation workshops will be offered for free on April 14 at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Loudenback said residents who attend the workshops will be confident about installing their own rain barrels.

To register for a workshop or for more information, contact Loudenback at 366-5435 or by email at Michele.loudenback@normanok.gov.
